Book a wedding or civil partnership ceremony

Book a wedding or civil partnership ceremony

Congratulations! - choosing the venue for your wedding or civil partnership will be one of the most important decisions you will make.

Maybe you want to celebrate with all your family and friends, or you want a small, intimate ceremony with just yourself, your partner, and 2 witnesses, or anything in between?

Whatever your choices, we have many magnificent venues to suit your desires:

  • The Bootham Suite, at 56 Bootham, which can accommodate up to 50 guests and the couple
  • one of our approved venues
  • a statutory ceremony, 2 witnesses and the couple - this basic ceremony option is available, late afternoons on selected weekdays only, so availability is limited

Reserve a ceremony date

Before you start the process to reserve your ceremony date, you need to have decided on:

  • the venue
  • your preferred date for the ceremony to take place
  • whether you want your ceremony to start in the morning or afternoon

You'll be able to select your preferences, and our registrar availability will be confirmed when making your booking.

Our Registrars

A Registrar, also known as a Civil Registration Officer or Deputy Superintendent Registrar, is a person appointed to legally perform and record marriages and civil partnerships. These take place at approved marriage and civil partnership venues in the district of York.

Our team of Registrars are trained to provide a legally binding marriage or civil partnership.

We can also provide bespoke, personalised ceremonies that are unique to you as a couple.

Our only restriction is that civil ceremonies cannot be religious in nature. Therefore we're unable to include hymns, prayers or other religious rituals or symbols.

Once your ceremony is reserved

Once you've reserved your ceremony using our ceremony booking form, you'll be provided with a booking reference which we recommend keeping to hand for future communications.

You'll receive a call from one of our experienced team members up to 3 business days from submitting the form, who will confirm the booking details you entered and answer any questions you have.

Please ensure the details you enter are correct, including your contact telephone number so we can contact you.

You should both also receive an automated email confirming the provisional booking. If you don’t receive an email, please contact us on email: ceremonies@york.gov.uk.
